Contest at Library
Fox horn-blowing and fascinating tales of foxhunting in this country and abroad will bfe featured at the opening program of the Rappahannock Library this fall, starting with a fox horn* blowing contest on the steps of tha library at 7 p.m., Thursday, November 11. Thus it will be an evening fully devoted to the Virginia foxhunting tradition, on horse and on foot. The horn-blowing contest will be sponsored by the Northern Virginia Foxhunters’ Association headed by W. H. Lyne, fprmer County Agent, and the main speaker of the program inside the Library will be Jane Mcllvaine McClary, author and sportsman, whose varied talents as a spinner of stories is matched by her varied experiences as a huntsman
Mrs. McClary was born in Pittsburgh but when she was seven the family moved to Middleburg, where she rode her pony to a one-room schoolhouse. Often she had to walk home because the pony would get restless listening to arithmetic or English lessons and leap out of the yard to run home. Today Mrs. McClary lives in her original home in Middleburg with her husband. Nelson
Her autobiography, It Happens Every Thursday, largely about the country weekly she edited and published for years at Downingtown, Pa., was made into a movie starring Loretta Young. She has written in all 13 books, the most recent entitled A Portion for Foxes due for publication next spring. All have been children’s books except the autobiography, so children as well as adults should greatly enjoy her colorful stories Nov. 11 of tricky foxes and gallant steeds.
