The concert stage of Filene Center at WQlf Trap Farm in Vienna, Virginia, vibrated to the joyful sounds of rural black church music recently when a number of church singing groups From Rappahannock County and environs took part in the 33rd Annual National Folk Festival. A two-hour program of black church music, emceed by Dr. Charles L. Perdue of Woodville, attempted to recreate on the concert stage a typical singing program that one might find on most any Sunday in some of the local churches. The songs presented covered the range of black church singing - spirituals, gospel songs, and hymns - and the audience in the 3,500 seat Center responded enthusiastically.
The groups taking part in the program were: The Young People’s Chorus from Hopewell Baptist Church, Sperryville; the Jackson Family and the Haney Family from Shiloh Baptist Church, Woodville; the Pilgrim Travelers and the Newman Sisters from St. Steven’s Baptist Church, Stevensburg.
