Rappahannock News Washington, Va. Dear Editor:

“And that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

When Mr. Lincoln uttered these immortal words he clearly described the goal of America’s democracy. This is a goal that America has yet to achieve. Reading your editorial of recent publications, I find the local politicians and their friends in their writings help me to understand why we have failed to achieve this goal in our so-called democracy.

It appears they are not interested in the needs and desires of the voters. They would prefer to rule according to their own satisfaction, disregarding the needs of the people. To ignore the will of the people means you are unwilling to serve the people. This is why democracy is declining around the world, and at home. Too many politicians are forgetting “We the people.”
