On his 950 acres, Mr. Barksdale fertilized and limes the grasslands according to its needs, and rotated livestock to prevent over grazing. He drained the land with tile and open ditches where needed and managed the woodland by harvesting the timer as it matured. Measures were taken to protect the woodland from fire and destructive grazing. He also provides for wildlife by leaving areas necessary for their food and cover. Other aspects of his productive and dedicated life include his work on the Rappahannock Planning Commission since its inception, acting at present as chairman of the group , and with the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department, having served the organization as its president for 16 years. He is an officer in the County Fire Association and instrumental in fund raising activities for both organizations.
