Soon families throughout the nation and Virginia will start transforming evergreen trees into works of art. All sprayed, trimmed, sprinkled and wrapped, the tree becomes a shimmering delight and source of pride. But to the family whose Christmas tree once caught fire, the vision is not quite so pretty. The Virginia State Department of Health has some suggestions to avoid such a tragedy. Because evergreens are filled with pitch and resin they burn rapidly. Another reason they catch fire is they are allowed to dry out. Rapid drying can be reduced by buying a fresh tree; one with springy branches and tight green needles. The tree should be kept outdoors, standing in water or snow, until it is time to decorate it. Once inside, keep the tree in a sturdy stand which is constantly filled with water. For added protection mix into a gallon of water: nine ounces of Borax; four ounces of Boric Acid and; one and one half teaspoons of low sudsing detergent. As the tree absorbs the mixture, add more to the tree stand’s water reservoir. Absorption can be increased by sowing the base of the tree on a •slant.
Where the tree is located in the room is important too. Keep it away from heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces and heat ducts. Place the tree so that if it falls it will not block a doorway.
The type of decorations used can greatly influence the chances of the tree catching fire. Electric lights are the most likely source. Only Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) approved lights that are in good repair should be used. And the trailing cords should be taped to the baseboard where they will not be tripped over.
Electric lights should be used with caution anywhere but especially on metal trees. Also, the fuse of the circuit serving the tree should not be over fifteen amperes. The tree lights should ways be unpluged when retiring or leaving the house.
If children are to help decorate the tree, reserve the lower branches for them. And use soft, unbreakable ornaments that will be within reach of children and pets. Fireproof ornaments should be used elsewhere on the tree. Remove the tree when the needles begin to fall.
