College Men Go
Va. State Police
The 54th State Police Basic Training School, now in session at Richmond and consisting of 43 conditionally appointed troopers, includes nine who have college degrees and six others with college backgrounds, Colonel H. W. Burgess, the Department’s Superintendent, revealed today. The nine degrees in Health and Physical Education, Business Economics, Sociology, Law Enforcement, History, Social Sciences, Forestry and Political Science were obtained from Pikeville College of Kentucky, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Old Dominion University (3), East Tennessee State University, East Carolina University, Wayne Community College of North Carolina and Virginia Commonwealth University.
The other six with college backgrounds studied at Virginia State College, Oregon State University, the^University of Nebraska, Lincoln Memorial University of Tennessee, the University of Virginia Extension at Lynchburg and John Tyler Community College of Chester, Va.
“We are very gratified to see young men with these backgrounds join our Department and invest in a law enforcement career,” Colonel Burgess said.
Noting that there are still about 60 trooper vacancies, Colonel Burgess explained that the basic educational requirement for the position is a high school diploma or its equivalent through the General Education Development Program.
