Dis. Service Award
Washington, D.C. -- Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr., of Virginia today was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the Board of Trustees of the nonpartisan Americans for Constitutional Action. The ACA award is given every two years to legislators whose records in Congress, in the Trustees’ opinion, “support legislation which serves to strengthen and defend the spirit and principles of the Constitution of the United States.” Byrd has received the award twice previously, in 1967 and 1969.
In presenting the award; Charles A. McManus, President of ACA, saluted Byrd for his support of “fundamental principles of good government.”
McManus said acceptance of the award by Byrd does not imply the Senator’s agreement with all principles espoused by ACA.
“Our purpose is solely to honor him for his dedication to the Constitution,” McManus said.
