This Saturday, December 18, will be the last day of turkey season statewide. The bear season ends the last day of December. Coming in again next week will be dove season. This the last part of a split season will open at 12 noon the 22nd of December and close January 3, 1972.
The hunter safety program in the Rappahannock County High School was completed in November. One hundred and one students in the eighth and ninth grades took part in the program. This program has been annually sponsored by the Rappahannock Game and Fish Club. As has been pointed out to the students, successfully completing this course does not guarantee the person will handle guns safely or that failing the course necessarily mean that person is a poor gun handler. The course is intended to teach safe gun handling and by means of a written test an attempt is made to determine which students possess a sufficient knowledge of safe gun handling. It was pointed out that safe gun handling comes with practice. Parents with youngsters who handle guns are urged to work with them along these lines.
Tenth grade students were given a brief introduction to wildlife managements. An effort was made to make these boys aware of some of the management practices used and to show that through management wildlife can benefit greatly.
Four hours of instruction including the test were given in both courses.
