MC NEAR SERVED eight years in the Combat Engineers, serving in Korea and Vietnam and in the states at Fort Belvoir and the Pentagon. He served in engineer battalions as company commander of battalion staff officer.
He gained experience in variety of engineering projects ranging from road and bridge design and construction to master plan design and construction supervision of a 20,000-man base camp cantonment.
He served as aid-decamp to the senior member of the Military Armistice Commission in Korea, and as the secretary of the General Staff (executive assistant) to the commanding general of Fort Belvoir. And, for two years, he was assigned to the assistant Secretary of Defense for manpower. He attained the rank of major.
AMONG HIS decorations are the Bronze Star for duty in Vietnam.
