Unlabeled seed
can be costly
Seed that has not been labeled or tested is being purchased by some farmers in the state according to Dennis E. Brown, supervisor of the seed section of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce.
“This can be very expensive , ” cautioned Brown. “Often times untested and unlabeled seed is low in germination and contains noxious weed seeds which can result in a complete crop failure or contamination of the farm with noxious weeds.”
All seeds which are sold, transported, or advertised must be labeled to meet the requirements of the Virginia seed law. Unless an analysis tag is attached to each bag of seed the farmer has no assurance the seed has been tested, and therefore the quality is unknown.
While the Department makes every attempt to see that seed is truthfully labeled by inspections, sampling and testing the purchaser is reminded he can only be protected by buying seed that is labeled. □
