Commissioner Vern L. Hill of the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles says that on October 1 the first of the new multiyear license plates were issued.
The new plates, which will be valid for one year from the month issued will only be issued to persons who are purchasing a car and do not already have plates to transfer to the new car.
The multi-year concept was authorized by the 1972 General Assembly, and every car owner will have received the new plates which have dark blue letters on a white background by April 15, 1973. Two validating decals will be required denoting the month and year of expiration.
Plates issued in October of 1972 will have a decal showing they expire in October of 1973. When they expire, a new decal showing the year 1974 will be issued. No new plates will be issued.
The same procedure will continue during the months of November, December, January and February. Approximately 120,000 new plates will be issued during these months.
