Editor: Some confusion between Mr. John W. (Billy) Williams and me has recently arisen from the many newspaper reports about his appointing local chairmen of “Democrats for Godwin.” A number of Democratic readers have seen “Williams” in the headlines and have asked if it is the same Williams whom they supported in 1970 and 1972. It is not.
As the 7th District Chairman, Mr. Billy Williams loyally supported me in both elections. For that I am grateful, but in 1973 he and I go separate ways.
It must be hard for such a loyal and lifelong Democrat as Mr. Billy Williams to support a Republican nominee for Governor (even an ex-Democrat), but is much too hard for me even to think of doing so. I shall vote instead for Henry Howell, who looks and sounds like a real Democrat. His opponent, Mr. Godwin, is not only carrying the Republican banner, but also is actively working against our Democratic candidates for Lieutenant Governor and AttorneyGeneral.
While many voters have no commitment or obligation to either Party, a person who has had his Party’s nomination for national office, as I have, is in a different position. I would be disloyal to Democrats who worked for me in 1970 and 1972 if I now supported a Republican nominee for Governor.
