THE SUSPECTED CASES of arson—“suspected” is used only in the narrowest legal sense; most certainly these fires were set deliberately, from what we’ve learned—aren’t the only things that have occurred in recent months that make good Rappahannock citizens wonder about what’s going on. Case's of robbery, breaking and entering and vandalism have been far too frequent occurrences.

Mr. Johnson is offering a reward for information leading to a conviction for damage he suffered. Little Jimmy isn’t in a position to be able to do the same, and as far as he is concerned, paying a reward wouldn’t bring back his riding mower, anyway.

What would be a far better reward would be for all of us to resolve to do all we can to make Rappahannock the friendly, decent place to live in that it has always been. If the county is safe for Jimmy and Jimmy’s mower, then it’s safe for all of us.

Above all, we should not want to see a few irresponsible individuals spoil things for everyone. Persons living in apple-growing country know better than anyone that it only takes a few rotten apples to spoil the whole barrel.□
