Last week’s editorial, sparked by some fine and exciting participation by the public at the first of the hearings for the new zoning proposals in Rappahannock, dealt with an issue which admits of some historic fencestraddling, namely: Just how much can the individual question the sworn guardian of his rights without hamstringing him as a public servant; and just how efficiently representative of the citizenry can the public servant be if he neglects to inform the individuals who in turn should inform him?
This relates, as you point out, in a wider sense to the frequently muddled thinking on whether our nation is a so-called democracy or a republic. Most agree, I believe, that our founders intended a republic, but the question of actual function does indeed remain moot. So, if you have taken a position astride a rail on this one it is an understandable first for your fine and public-spirited newspaper.
