THE OTHER DAY while looking through my scrapbook I came across this bit of nonsense: “When Adam found that Eve had deceived him and caused both of them to lose Paradise, he called her woe-man. After they left Eden and began, to face realities, Adam took a good look at Eve and saw that she was a right cute gal, so he called her woo-man. After the newness of this relationship began to wane he noticed that she was a creature of whims, so he called her whimman.”
I don’t know how it came about, but somehow the laws of phonetics or spelling were changed; now we call them women. Libbers call themselves she-persons.
I had occasion recently to hold a door open for a sweet young person. I had read that libbers objected to this, so I apologized, no offense intended. She assured me that she was not offended, that she appreciated such courtesies.
There are some people that are gifted with a heavenly (angelic ?) beauty that seems to transcend reality, yet we know that they are human; they sometimes are haughty and arrogant because of their beauty. This poem by Friedrich ‘To a Too Lovely Lady’ is for them:
Not for your beauty will the planets halt
To stare from heaven, or the haughty moon.
Nor will the sun stand moveless in the moon.
Time will not prove them guilty of a fault
Who looked upon you and forbore to swoon,
Who would not wreck the heavens to exalt
Your shining excellence. The long assault
Of years will prove them wise, alas, too soon.C
