“WE WANT to preserve the small town aspect of Sperryville. Metropolitan people come through here to buy apples and baskets and antiques. They come because they wanted to be . in the country. If they had wanted a high speed highway, they could get on Interstate 95 and drive to Florida without a stop„ -light.”
Gene Wray, planning engineer from the Highway Department explained why the project is needed. “Once the average daily traffic volume reaches a certain level, it is our standard procedure, subject to modification, to bring an arterial highway up io federal standards.”
Wray said that an average of 4000 cars a day pass through Sperryville. The number is far more in the. summer and fall as tourists use Route 211 to get on the Skyline Drive. The Highway Department estimates that around 6000 cars a day will pass through Sperryville by 1995.
