Road dilemma
SOME SPERRYVILLE residents would rather have the Highway Department “improve” the roads running through their town, and not skirt the community by building bypasses. Some other people think maybe a bypass would be better.
Both views are understandable, and good arguments can be made in support of both sides. But the question that seems most pertinent of all is why is the Highway Department so determined to four-lane all of those roads, anyway?
By now, even the Highway Department must have heard about the “energy crisis” and the worries this has created for members of the motoring public. Why continue to build more roads or widen roads when there is a strong possibility that highway use might be rationed? As Supervisor Pete Luke pointed out the other night, there are vast superhighway projects already under way to serve roughly the same east-west corridor in which Sperryville is situated. Why build still more roads serving the same general purpose?
