CLIFTON, THE old stone home located on Route 729 between Ben Venue and Flint Hill is the third and final house on the tour. This is owned by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Rodgers and was built in about 1775. The stone walls of the lower part of the house are 33 inches thick and the second story walls measure 24 inches. The deepset windows have the original glass intact and the simple doors are made of poplar or pine.
The Rodgers have taken the utmost care in renovating and restoring the house, to install a bathroom and preserve the native wood trims, old stones and plaster. Three outbuildings remain, a corncrib, barn with stone stalls and hewn beams and a combination spring house, smoke house and root cellar.
Other activities in Rappahannock scheduled in conjunction with the house tour include an arts and crafts show and sale in Sperryville, lunch served by a Washington church group, country supper at Flint Hill in the evening and several bake sales.
EXHIBITS AND sales by the Rappahannock Arts and Crafts Group members will be held at the Sperryville fire hall on Route 211 west and will include paintings, hand-made articles, decoupage, leather goods, candles, metal work, macrame, hand painted china and many other craft items. Hours for this coincide with the tour hours.
