The village is located in a flood - plain and county ordinances prevent future development in floodplains.
The engineering firm of Hayes, Seay, Mattern and Mattern had included Sperryville when they prepared a regional water quality management plan, which they presented to the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District Commission in December. They suggested in that plan that Sperryville construct a “sewage stabilization pond” near the confluence of the North and South Fork of the Thornton River.
RAPPAHANNOCK delegates to the regional planning commission, Pete Luke and Fanning Baumgardner, pointed out that such a treatment method was not approved by the State Water Control Board and also that the cost would be out of proportion to Sperryville’s needs and means.
