THE NATION’S farm population was estimated to total 9.5 million persons in April 1973 according to an annual report released by the Bureau of the Census and the Economic Research Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The Bureau is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Social and Economic Statistics Administration.
The 1973 estimate suggests that the Nation’s farm population may have stabilized during the 197073 period for the first time since the mid - 1940’s, when returning veterans and released defense workers temporarily checked the long - term farm population decline. The proportion of the total U. S. population on farms was 4.5 percent in 1973 compared to 4.8 percent in 1970 and 4.6 percent in 1971 and 1972. Because of sampling variability, the differences in the farm population are not statistically significant in any of these years.
