ALONG WITH many other Rappahannock citizens, we’re proud of the organization within our midst which has dedicated itself to the county’s interests, and we take a back seat to no one in our admiration of the accomplishments of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, Inc.
But a statement in the October RLEP newsletter requires comment. A report is given on the Board of Supervisors’September meeting, under the heading “Supervisors reject planning.” After an account of the majority Supervisor vote which decided against spending $1,500 for acquiring what the RLEP describes as “basic planning materials” for the county, the conclusion is reached that by the Board’s vote, “every effort by the Planning Commission to date was categorically rejected.”
That’s an overly extravagant conclusion. What we heard at the Supervisors’ meetings were some well-taken remarks about how the planning proposals being made seemed to be far in excess of what Rappahannock County needs. No one was against planning, as such, as they were reluctant to spend hundreds of dollars for elaborate maps, “environmental inventories,” detailed “statements of necessity,” and other professional planning bureaucratic paraphernalia that might be
