LOOSE OBJECTS inside a vehicle become deadly projectiles when a crashf occurs. “Several crash studies by the Highway Safety Division’s Crash Investigation Team (CIT) illustrate the importance of securing all packages carried inside a vehicle and its trunk,” says John T. Hanna, Division director.
Even tires and wheels carried in the trunk can be dangerous if not securely fastened. In one case investigated by tHe CIT, the crash impact sent a loose tire and wheel through the backseat into the passenger compartment and injured a passenger.
During another crash the driver’s skull was fractured by a flying tool chest. Damage to the driver’s compartment was not extensive, however, the driver died from head injuries received when the tool chest struck him in the back of the head. The 50 m.p.h. crash impact had turned the tool kit into a weapon.
