It is not uncommon for sawmills to buy timber a 100 or more miles from their place of business. Most landowners do not know all of the potential timber buyers that might be interested in their timber. Your local County Forester should be consulted for the names of these buyers. Third, once a timber owner knows what he is selling and how much, it is usually best to put the timber up for bids.
Selling timber on a bid basis is usually the most efficient way of arriving at the highest fair market price. It is &fficult to keep up with the selling price of timber due to the fluctuation of the market for the various Kinds ana quality of timber. Because the market fluctuates substantially over brief periods of time, there is no systematic price reporting system for timber such as there is for livestock.
THIS IS why bids are very useful. The survey conducted by Professor Lowry’s class pointed out that it is not unusual for landowners, especially with small tracts, to be under paid considerably when they neglect to seek bids or to keep up with the general sales trend in the timber market.
On occassion, the owners have received less than one-fourth of the actual worth of the timber. Information on market conditions and on the quality of the timber because they do not know what they have to sell or its value.
The economics class survey noted that the Virginia Division of Forestry is extremely useful in managing timber while the trees are growing and in giving the landowners valuable information as to how best to sell their timber.
THE VIRGINIA Division of Forestry, which is represented in Greene, Madison and Rappahannock County by Forester Evan L. Sharp, will advise owners as to which trees are ready to be sold and which trees should be left to gr-ow. If the forest has not reached its maturity, the Virginia Division of Forestry can mark which trees should be cut and estimate their board foot volume for a charge of 75C per thousand feet.
If all trees are to be cut, the Virginia Division of Forestry will not appraise timber or give the volume estimate but Forester Sharp had the names of private consulting foresters that will cruise and appraise the value of timber; many local landowners have taken advantage of services of the consulting foresters. The information the consulting forester gives the landowner will tell the timber owner how much and what type of timber he has; the consulting forester can also appraise the timber’s value.
Many timber buyers are much more willing to submit bids on timber that has been cruised and estimated by a professional forester, because the buyer does not have to spend as much time going over the timber. The Division of Forestry will have special suggestions for a timber sales contract; Forester Sharp will be able to supply the landowner with the names of reputable timber buyers that might be interested in the timber.
FORESTER Sharp will, at no charge, examine any woodland no matter how small or large; the information obtained through this examination gives the landowner
