a low stack of wood, along the edge of the big pile of stove wood that takes up half the room. There’s a window on each side the room, although one is nearly covered by the wood.

The entire room is as black as the inside of a smokehouse. The walls, the furniture, the woodpile.

There’s not much problem keeping warm in the winter, Miss Anna said. The stove “heats up the house real good. But I got to get me a new stove, now real soon, because the stove that I’ve got is burnt out and it ain’t much good. You can see.”

Miss Anna said she has sometimes wished for a better house. “But some people, they don’t want me to move. They like my ways of doing things. They want me to stay here,” she said.

Miss Anna cooks for herself. “Meat and bread and things; and I buys canned stuff from the store.” She thinks it’s better that she takes care of herself instead of depending on someone else. “When you live in with people, lots of the people you live in with don’t treat you right, But I’m used to this now. When my Daddy raised us up, he raised us up to ourselves. He didn’t want we all to live in, to put us in with nobody, on account of, he said, other people don’t treat you right.

“I take right good care of myself. I does that tight as I can. My mother and daddy raised me tight. They raised me for to do that.”
