public sometimes suspects that the proper preposition here is “to” and not “for”—they’re trying to do things “to” the public, not “for” it.
• Why do so many Virginia judges seem to think that the wishes of land speculators and developers take precedence over elected officials, sound public economics, health, and common sense? That certainly seems to be the situation regarding a dismaying string of recent court decisions. Why?
• Why do so many people, at a time of growing gasoline problems and economic squeezes, persist in wanting to move such, a distance away from their job that it requires a 100-mile commuter round-trip every day? And why, when they move to the country, do they want all the city’s “conveniences,” and live smack-dab up against one another?
• Why does a county which professes to want to control growth hire a developer lawyer to advise it, one who comes from a firm which has played the central role in knocking down local control measures? Does that really make sense? Is there no wisdom at all in the old folk warnings against putting foxes to guard the henhouse, goats to watch over the cabbage?
The questions go on, but the point has undoubtedly been made. No, we don’t know all of the answers. But we sure do know a lot of the questions.
