THE VIRGINIA State Corporation Commission has refused to reconsider and issue a restraining order against Vepco’s permit to build 500 kilovolt powerlines from Mount Storm, W. Va., through Fauquier, Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties to the North Anna nuclear power plant. Both the Culpeper and Rappahannock Leagues for Environmental Protection have appealed this ruling to the Virginia Supreme Court.
The request for reconsideration of SCC’s approval of the Vepco powerlines and the restraining order were considered first steps in efforts to stop the powerlines, but lawyers for the two environmental groups did not expect the SCC to act favorably. The SCC refused the two requests without any debate or explanation.
Three more “steps” remain in the effort to stop the controversial powerlines. Both the Rappahannock and Culpeper Leagues have appealed SCC approval of the powerlines to the Supreme Court. The Fauquier Board of Supervisors has
