Eye donations
PLEDGES from approximately 6,000 Virginians wishing to donate their eyes on death to a blind person were received by the Old Dominion Eye Bank during the past 12 months, according to R. Kenneth Hudgins, executive director of the Eye Bank. At the end of June, 1975, the Eye Bank had 62,015 pledge cards on file, Hudgins said, most of them were obtained by members of Lions Clubs in Northeastern Virginia.
During this same twelve month period, he said, 132 corneal transplants were performed using eye tissue supplied by the Old Dominion Eye Bank. Eye tissue which has been donated, on death, by a person with poor eyesight, Hudgins stated, can be just as valuable and effective in sight-restoring corneal transplant operations as tissue from the eye of a person with perfect vision.
Hudgins emphasized that anyone wishing to pledge their eyes, on death, for the purpose of restoring sight to a blind individual can do so by getting a pledge card from any member of a Virginia Lions Club, or by contacting the Old Dominion Eye Bank, 408 North 12th Street, Richmond, 23219.U
