He cited research conducted by Tech suggesting that about twothirds of the total gain put on grass-fed cattle is achieved by mid-July. “What most producers need to do to maximize their farm production,” Williamson observed, “is to stock their pastures at grazing capacity during the spring and early summer with the intention of marketing some of their cattle in July, thus reducing their herds to late July and August grazing capacity.”
THE BEEF scientist noted that over the years demand for yearling steers and heifers has remained good in July compared to later fall demand. Since 1967, he said, steer cattle sold at Winchester have averaged $1.30 per hundredweight higher than comparable steers sold in September and October.
Except for last year, July prices for yearlings sold at Winchester have tended to remain higher than fall prices, Williamson said. More information about the summer yearling sales may be obtained from local Virginia Tech Extension offices. □
