that although the Committee has in the past favored Scenic River status for the Rapidan all the way to the town of Rapidan, "“We now feel that several miles of the upper Rapidan should be dropped from consideration because of strong opposition from riverfront property owners.”
IN THE letter to Blackmore, Committee Chairman George Newman expressed the group’s approval of the "major aspects” of the COR’s preliminary plan for the rivers. The letter noted that in the plan "access points are limited largely to existing access points” and that the plan attempts to "keep development to a minimum.” The Committee favors Scenic River designation of the entire 34-mile stretch of the Rappahannock from Remington to Fredericksburg.
The Rappahannock Defense Committee was formed several years ago to work for preservation of the Rappahannock and Rapidan in their natural state. The group was active in the fight against the Army Corps of Engineers’ Salem Church Dam' project, and has recently been working in support of Scenic River protection for the rivers. □
