“NO man is an island, entire of itself,” wrote John Donne in the 17th Century, and neither is a county in Virginia an island, unrelated to what goes on around it. Rappahannock citizens should know this better than most— power generated in far-distant locations would be routed through our beautiful county via hideous, dominating powerline structures, if the electricity magnates have their way.

It’s the same with a lot of other factors in our society. Broad highways reaching into urban centers create pressures on our rural landscape. A factory in a neighboring county can pollute our air. Suburban development in another neighboring jurisdiction can overcrowd our country roads.
