WHAT’S HAPPENING TO THE LOCUST TREES? — We have received a number of calls from concerned people inquiring about the brown and apparently dying locust trees in several areas in the county. The culprit is the locust leaf miner that appears to be having a real population explosion this year. This small brownish beetle lays its eggs on the leaf surface. And the new hatched larva penetrate the leaf and mine out the inside. Their population explosion appears to occur in long term irregular cycles. And based on past observation, I would expect all but the weak and diseased locust trees to be back in good health next spring.
QUITE A YOUNGSTER—The word is quietly spreading about a record breaking youngster named “Doc.” His daddy is a Simmental and his mammy is a Holstein and at 169 days of age this bull calf weighs a whopping 725 pounds. His nurse maid and proud owner is James C. “Doc” Johnson of Washington, Va. We will keep you posted
