Robinson critical

of Reagan action

Seventh District Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson made this comment on Ronald Reagan’s selection of Pennsylvania Senator Richard S. Schweiker to be his vice presidential running mate, should Reagan win the Republican nomination:

“I am surprised and disappointed by Governor Reagan’s choice of a prospective naming mate. A Reagan-Schweiker ticket would have a divisive effect within the Republican Party and disenchant many conservative independents.

“Governor Reagan’s base of support in his quest for the Republican Presidential nomination has been solidly conservative. His choice of a Senator with one of the most pronounced liberal voting records of Republicans in Congress is most difficult to understand.
