And the biggest pressure for change originates all the way “down country/’ in Washington, D.C. People seeking relief from the often intolerable pressures of modern urban life are producing the greatest pressures for changing the Rappahannock landscape. This is noted not to deplore the new citizens— as they’ve been valuable additions, by and large, and the county is in many ways a livelier and more interesting place because of them. But if we are not to destroy the very thing we love—the beauty of Rappahannock—the need exists for some careful decisions about our county’s future.
