of recovery. In 1976, the value of stolen property reported was $40,842 with $11,820 recovered for a .rate of 29 per cent, “right around the state average of 31 per cent in 1975, ” said Jones. The rate for recovery of stolen property in Fauquier County was 21 per cent in 1976.
FIGURES presented by Jones indicate that crime in Rappahannock has increased considerably over the past year. In 1975, 87 offenses occurred in the categoiy of ‘‘serious crime” that includes murder, robbery, assault and rape. Serious crimes totaled 132 in 1976, a 52 per cent increase.
Thirty-seven burglaries were committed in Rappahannock in 1975, 49 in 1976, said Jones. ‘‘Simple assaults are up quite a bit,” Jones told the Rappahannock Supervisors. In 1975, three were committed. In 1976, the number jumped to 27. Only murders showed a decrease, with two occurring in 1975 and one in 1976.
Jones noted later that Rappahannock has a high burglary rate but the county has no investigators, bnly a sheriff and two deputies. By comparison, he reported that Culpeper County sheriffs department has two full-time investigators and a stolen property recovery rate of 48 per cent in 1975 and 42 per cent in 1976.—Daphne McCullough
