The natural hardwood stands in the Blue Ridge Mountains are among Virginia’s greatest renewable natural resources. Rappahannock Countv has its fair share of excellent hardwoods—red oaks, white oaks, ash, poplars. Locally, hardwood stand management is (1) the most needed, and (2) the most urgent forestry practice.
Why? First, it is most needed because of past misuse. Fire, grazing, clearing, and-or logging have affected every wooded acre in the county. These—especially the latter—have not always been significantly detrimental.
