make tnem apply equally to both partners. They could recognize housework as a form of support, and many states now do so. Would changing these laws really make much difference as a practical matter?
As it is now, if a man is making a good salary but not giving his wife enough money to buy food or clothing for herself or their children, the courts will not do anything unless she seeks a legal separation or divorce. Then alimony is awarded only in a small percentage of cases, and usually it is a matter, not of a judge or court setting alimony, but of approving an agreement previously worked out by lawyers representing both spouses. None of this would change under the ERA.
