request from my office at Madison. As with any management practices, these four methods are intended to control the composition of the forest stand so that an objective or ideal is approached. Most often, this objective is “Maximum sustained yield of valuable wood products.” This objective is not entirely an economic one. A financially valuable product is, almost by definition, the most useful product: An oak with a straight, tall, clear stem brings the highest price as veneer material; it is also the most easily cut and split for firewood; it is also an indication of a good soil and a well-stocked stand. It follows that a valuable timber stand is also a healthy timber stand. Economy, health, productivity—these things are merely different aspects of the same objective condition.

Our forests are a valuable renewable resource. Our hardwood stands have a value that must be conserved. To plant hardwoods and end up with a productive stand is often impossible, usually impractical, and always expensive. Our best hardwood stands are several human generations old.

Because of the time element, and because of the difficulties involved in establishing a hardwood stand artificially, we have a lot at stake. One of our greatest renewable resources, if mis-managed, might become essentially nonrenewable, like coal and oil.
