Nevertheless^ there was clear evidence of movement.

In the House of Delegates, the Democrats emerged from the 1977 election with their massive majority only slightly less massive.

Before the election they held 79 seats in the 100 member House; after it their number dropped to 76. The Republicans increased their minority from 17 to 21 and the number of independents dropped from four to three. The number of black members increased from one to three and the number of women from seven to nine.

The major changes were within the controlling Democratic majority. The defeat of Del. James M. Thomson of Alexandria, the majority leader, with the retirement, voluntary or by the will of the voters, of a half-dozen other conservative stalwarts will erode, to an undetermined degree, the conservative moorings of the House.

Twelve of the 20 standing committees will have new chairmen when the House organizes next week.

In the Senate, where the GOP minority is even more anemic than in the House, the Republicans suffered a new setback. In a special election in the 24th Senatorial District to replace Atty. Gen.-elect J. Marshall Coleman of

To the editor:

Washington, Virginia doesn’t deserve the secondclass rating conferred on it by the distasteful sign on the new restaurant, The Inn, at Little Washington, in town.

There is no little Washington and there never has been. Washington, Virginia has a unique quality of its own (which is probably one reason the restaurant located here) and needs no modifying adjective to distinguish it from other towns of the same name. We give little Washington a zero rating with no smile.
