A wife who is receiving support from her husband is getting it, not because the law requires it, but because he is willing to pay it. And if this comfortable situation should cease, either because of death or divorce, the wife will be thrown out on a job market full of rampant discrimination against women.
If the ERA fails, the many employers who discriminate against women will feel free to continue, because they can assume this society is unwilling to treat women equally. I sincerely hope Virginia in 1978 will join 35 other states in approving this amendment to the US Constitution.
