Deaths Rise
Highway fatality statistics for the first four months of 1978 show an increase in pedestrian deaths in Virginia.
‘‘As of May 1, 56 pedestrians have died on the state's highways or nine more than last year’s count for the same period." according to John T. Hanna, director. Highway Safety Division of Virginia.
“The rise in pedestrian fatalities is surprising since half the victims this year are 40 years of age or older.
“Motorists during evening hours can make it easier and safer for pedestrians by using their headlights as soon as the sun begins to go down. Drivers should reduce their speed at night and be ready for quick stops when traveling through busy intersections,” continued Hanna. "Pedestrians, which includes joggers, can help make themselves more visible by wearing white or reflective clothes and carrying a flashlight."
