Mr. Arundel's logic of accepting the Alpine Slide because something worse might come along if we don’t is specious. There are other alternatives besides a “mountainside development of crackerbox weekend houses."
Of course, it could happen and this possibility points out the need for a comprehensive plan with legally sustainable zoning ordinances. We are vulnerable without a strong planning process.
On the other hand, such a crackerbox development is almost a certainty if this slide is established. It will attract cheap resort properties, junk food stands, additional amusement rides, thousands of cars, increased litter and pollution of Rush River. Gone is the peace and tranquillity of a beautiful valley, the wild life (hunters and fishermen, forget it!) and the farm and forest land.
The only possible ad* vantage is that it may produce employment for a few — if the company doesn't bring along its own help. The increased tax base is a myth; it will eventually result in increased taxes. This has been proved elsewhere again and again.
The referendum idea is a good one if it has any legal value. If the people have the facts and vote a decision, that would end the controversy.
