Decreased
June 1978 visits to Shenandoah National Park decreased 28.2 per cent compared to the same month in 1977, according to statistics released by Park Superintendent Robert Jacobsen. The decrease for Calendar Year 1978 compared with Calendar Year 1977 has been 53.7 per cent to date.
Park officials attribute part of the decrease to new procedures for counting travel that went into effect January 1, 1978. A new multiplier (2.8 rather than 3.5) is being used for converting vehicles to visitors and travel on only three secondary roads is being counted.
Overnight stays during June 1978, totaled 85,792 compared to 85,440 for June 1977. So far this year, 183,700 visitors have stayed overnight at the Park compared to 220,435 for 1977.
The maximum temperature recorded in June at Big Meadows was 83 degrees; the minimum 34 degrees. Rainfall measured at Big Meadows totaled 4.58 inches.
