Mr. Jacobsen considers withdrawal of the exchange of Park land in Rappahannock County “counterproductive to our efforts to acquire a very valuable tract of privately owned land on Saddleback Mountain in Greene County.” We view his intention to continue with exchanges, rather than with alternative ways of acquiring land, a continuing breach of his sacred trust to guard Park lands for future generations. We believe that it is time that the federal bureaucracies were made aware of a general public repugnance to the use of the separation of federal powers to arrogate to themselves changing the intent of the laws written by the United States Congress, in order to further their own narrow interests.
We hope that the citizens of Rappahannock County will not completely lose interest in the subject of Park land exchanges now that the problem no longer appears to pose an immediate threat to the County. We suggest letters to Congressmen Robinson and Burton supporting their efforts to have the law clarified and accepted, and to William Whalen, Director of the National Park Service, reminding him of his responsibility to protect lands now administered by the National Park Service for future generations.
