A UTUMN BEGINS

When the center of the sun crosses directly over the earth’s equator, at 5:26 a.m. (EDT) on September 23. astronomers will note another autumnal equinox, marking the beginning of fall.

"From that moment on September 23 until the beginning of spring.” Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., director of the Science Museum of Virginia, explained. “the sun will be south of the equator, providing less heat in the northern hemisphere.”

Only twice each year, on the first day of autumn and the first day of spring (usually March 21), does the sun rise due east and set due west. On these two days the periods of daylight and darkness are nearly equal to 12 hours throughout the world.
