8. Supervisors Venus Board
Of Zoning Appeals *
Relations between the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors and the Board of Zoning Appeals have been strained for most of 1978 and the forecast doesn't call for much improvement. The Supervisors won approval from the courts to intervene in two suits rising out of BZA action. The intervention in cases involving denial by the BZA of the Rappahannock Ski Corporation's special use permit application and revocation of a special use permit granted to P. E. Steve DeMent alligned the Supervisors against the BZA for all practical purposes.
In addition, the Supervisors have continued to vote against paying the BZA's bill for attorney's fees for the two cases. The end of 1978 sees the BZA with an unpaid balance of $4,423.55 owed to lawyer Robert Fitzgerald while the Supervisors keep a tight hold on the county's purse strings.
9. Energy Shortages
Last winter's strike by the United Mine Workers gave county residents a glimpse of energy shortages that experts warn will become commonplace in the decade to come. As fuel supplies continued to dwindle, Potomac Edison and Allegheny Power System, the major producer of electrical power for Rappahannock homes, an nounced emergency plans in January 1978 that included interruption of service to groups of consumers by dropping circuits for a specified period of time on a rotating basis.
