They also agree that at some point before the balloting begins, perhaps in a nominating or seconding speech, Howell or Rawlings will signal their followers to go for Colley unless a more acceptable candidate emerges.
This theory holds that Horn’s early embrace by party conservatives may have damaged his ability to draw substantial support from those in the committee's liberal wing.
It also holds that his conservative connection may have damaged his ability to gain support of liberals in the party at large, if he should be elected.

The outcome of the election will depend on a number of imponderables, chief among which is the strength of the committee's liberal faction in the wake of a decade of electoral disasters in statewide races.
Indeed, this indication of liberal strength in the party's ruling council may be fully as significant for the Democrats’ future as the identity of the new chairman whom the committee elects.
Thus, what the Howell people do. whom they do it to. and how much clout they are able to muster in the process will be one of the main stories to watch when the Democratic committee convenes.
