Culpeper is one of three of the state's eight highway districts which will receive less in 1981-82 allocations for all four road categories — interstate, primary. urban and secondary systems-than in 1980-81. Rappahannock County is part of the Culpeper District.
Recommended tentative allocations for 1981-82 call for Culpeper District to get a total of $56,068,874 for interstate, primary, urban and secondary roads, $18,772,265 less than last year 1980-81.
Funds available for construction and reconstruction will decrease by $98.3 million in the the fiscal year which will begin July 1 under the budget adopted last week by the State Highway and Transportation Commission.
Officials attribute the reduction in funding levels primarily to a continued decline in income from state highway user taxes and from the steadily rising cost of maintaining existing state roads and city streets.
