have an uninterrupted class period. Likewise in the third lunch, students will attend an uninterrupted class period and then eat.
But in the middle shift, Kilpatrick explained, students will spend 20 minutes or so in class, eat lunch, and then come back to that same class for the remainder of the period. Students in the second lunch shift can’t come from home ec, shop or science classes where period-long projects would be interrupted by lunch, she pointed out.
Testing will also be a problem in academic classes going to second lunch shift, Kilpatrick said. “There are a lot of educational consequences with three lunch shifts,” she emphasized, adding that this was probably the reason why the administration hasn’t greeted the school board’s suggestion with much enthusiasm.
“The cafeteria seats 90 kids and there are over 400 in the school. It can’t be adequate!” Kilpatrick concluded.
With no other speakers, Luke closed the public hearing on the proposed school budget. Following an executive session on personnel with the school board members, he announced that the supervisors should be ready to act on the school budget by their May 4 meeting.
He added that if cuts are made to proposed school expenditures, the supervisors should reduce the bottom line total, letting the school board decide where to absorb losses.
