Confusion over enforcement of drug and alcohol policies apparently resolved, the Rappahannock school board voted unanimous approval at its April 14 meeting for a sanctioned senior class trip.
But instead of spending three days and two nights in Colonial Williamsburg as originally proposed, the seniors will go to Kings Dominion amusement park near Richmond for an evening.
Plans for Williamsburg were scrapped after the school board earlier dropped the approval originally given for the outing in response to questions raised by teachers. The teacher-chaperones wanted clarification of their responsibilities for enforcement of school policies while on the field trip. Concern centered primarily on extent of investigative duties, should a drug or alcohol policy violation occur.
Although school sanction was withdrawn, the board agreed to give students and teachers a day off from school to go to Williamsburg, emphasizing, however, that civil law rather than school law would apply on the trip. But questions of liability on the part of chaperones and reluctance of many parents to let their children participate without school regulations in effect led to cancellation of the activity.
