panannocK county t_ierk, and one of the organizers of the Fodderstack Gassic, said that the Eva L. Smith memorial award is given to commemorate Eva L. Smith of Flint Hill who died two years ago. Mrs. Smith had been clerk of both General District and circuit court in the county for many years. Her son. Galley Smith 111, ran from Flint Hill to Washington one day. "ran right into the court house," according to Bruce, "and suggested we organize a race along Fodderstack."
Mrs. Smith worked hard to help her son’s idea get off the ground, and so the imaginative award - a pottery cheese server, ^ complete with apple trees and running shoes, is named in her honor. This award, as well as the regular trophies, are made by local potter Jeannie Drevas and donated by local professionals and businessmen.
Besides Reynolds and Strange, several other local residents made a good showing. First in the male - twelve and under category was Matt Owings of Sperryville. Katie Arnold of Huntly. was the first girl in this category.
Linda Harvey of Culpeper was first in the 30 to 39 women’s category; Beth Turner of Fauquier County was first in the 40 to 49 women’s category; Martha Sutherland of Sperryville was fir^t in the 50 to 59 women’s category.
The youngest entrant was Greg Williams. 5, of Huntly; the oldest was Pauline Bruce. 68, of Washington. This year saw
